Although surrender takes first priority, obedience and commitment are two key principles for spiritual and personal success.
When we submit our lives to Jesus, we’re informing Him that we’re willing to follow His lead. What does it take to follow a leader? The desire to obey his instructions! But we must know God’s directives before we can be obedient to them.
If a soldier doesn’t understand instructions from his commander, he’ll soon wander into enemy territory and may lose his life. Good commanders give clear and concise commands. They train their soldiers to listen and obey their orders. Obedience preserves their life.
God left us His Word. It contains His instructions to us. When we follow His lead, His instructions, and remain in His territory—we preserve our life. God’s Word teaches us how to deflect evil, stand strong, and remain victorious. When we lay our human desires down, recognizing we have the most excellent Commander to get us through life victoriously, we’ll submit to His authority and rule. When we respond to Him in obedience, He ensures our protection and triumph.
Submission is only a difficult command when we don’t understand that life is a battleground that we’re in need of protection from. When we think we have the better plan, we’ll not obey or submit to a higher authority.
